Rare disease company EnBiotix merges with Swiss firm

EnBiotix Inc., a Boston-based biotech focused on rare diseases, is merging with Swiss oncology and antimicrobial resistance-focused company Polyphor. Under the terms of the agreement, Polyphor will acquire all of EnBiotix's outstanding capital stock; EnBiotix will in turn acquire the rights to inhaled murepavadin, a potent antibiotic that targets multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis patients, for $10 million . The merger is expected to close in the fourth quarter…

We report the case of a 4-year-old boy who initially developed a widespread popular–pustular rash 2 weeks after his 12-month measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations. These resolved with scarring then recurred following his 24-month vaccinations. Multiple skin biopsies were negative for infectious organisms and showed a granulomatous infiltrate with perforation and necrobiosis. The differential diagnosis included perforating granuloma annulare, infection, or rheumatoid nodules. At the age of 4, he developed fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia and other laboratory abnormalities, requiring hospitalization. A number...

ConclusionsThis study suggests that airborne Aspergillus fumigatus spores were more abundant during the summer months of the survey period, which appeared to be driven by increased temperatures and lower wind speeds. Indoor counts directly correlated to outdoor A. fumigatus levels and were elevated in patient rooms that were directly connected to the outdoor environment via an openable window designed for ventilation purposes. Further studies are required to determine the clinical implications of these findings for cystic fibrosis patients who are predisposed to Aspergillus related diseases, and in particular whether there...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), one of the most common progressive and severely disabling neuromuscular diseases in children, can be largely attributed to the loss of function of the DMD gene on chromosome Xp21.2-p21.1. This paper describes the case of a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with DMD. Whole exome sequencing confirmed the hypothesized large partial exonic deletion of c.7310-11543_7359del (chrX:g.31792260_31803852del) spanning exon 51 and intron 50 in DMD. This large deletion was verified to be de novo by PCR, and the two breakpoints were further confirmed by Sanger sequencing and long-read whole-genome sequencing. N...

The identification and synthesis of evidence on outcomes of interventions is a key step in systematic reviews, and a focus of methodological research in clinical epidemiology [1]. Selection – and selective reporting - of outcomes is also a major source of bias in primary studies and thus reviews, and can lead to overestimates of the effectiveness of interventions, and under-reporting of harms. It can also involve the reporting of outcomes that represent no clinical benefit to patient s, and for this reason there is an increasing emphasis on the incorporation of patients’ views into the development of outcome me...

In recent years, the increase in awareness of antimicrobial resistance together with the societal demand of healthier meat products have driven attention to health-related traits in livestock production. Previous studies have reported medium to high heritabilities for these traits and described genomic regions associated with them. Despite its genetic component, health- and immunity-related traits are complex and its study by association analysis with genomic markers may be missing some information. To analyse multiple phenotypes and gene-by-gene interactions, systems biology approaches, such as the association weight matr...

P Dasgupta, S Somasundaram, S Balasubramanian, S PalanisamyJournal of Postgraduate Medicine 2021 67(4):232-234 Duodenal inversum is a rare disease not frequently encountered in clinical practice. The diagnosis is usually made late due to its rarity. Many other causes of abdominal pain like ulcer disease, pancreatitis, malrotation are mostly thought of initially and the diagnosis is usually missed. Only a few cases of duodenal inversum present with outlet obstruction. Duodenojejunostomy is perhaps the ideal management for duodenal inversum if the patient presents with outlet obstruction. Our intention is to create awarenes...

Biochem J. 2021 Nov 25:BCJ20210644. doi: 10.1042/BCJ20210644. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSLC26A9, a member of the solute carrier protein family, transports chloride ions across various epithelia. SLC26A9 also associates with other ion channels and transporters linked to human health, and in some cases these heterotypic interactions are essential to support the biogenesis of both proteins. Therefore, understanding how this complex membrane protein is initially folded might provide new therapeutic strategies to overcome deficits in the function of SLC26A9 partners, one of which is associated with Cystic Fibrosis. To this ...
