Curr Oncol. 2021 Oct 3;28(5):3918-3931. doi: 10.3390/curroncol28050334.ABSTRACTRecent research has revealed that prostate cancer (PCa) survivors are facing a silent epidemic of mental disorder. These findings are not surprising when the side effects of highly effective current treatment modalities are considered. Here, we assess the association between urinary function and quality of life indicators to mental disorder among survivors of PCa. This is a cross sectional examination of an analytical sample of 362 men with a history of PCa residing in the Maritimes who took a survey assessing social, physical and health-related...

Mol Biol Rep. 2021 Oct 20. doi: 10.1007/s11033-021-06752-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer immunotherapy is a rapidly evolving concept that has been given the tag "fifth pillar" of cancer therapy while radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and targeted therapy remain the other four pillars. This involves the stimulation of the immune system to control tumor growth and it specifically targets the neoplastic cells rather than the normal cells. Conventional chemotherapy has many limitations which include drug resistance, recurrence of cancer and severe adverse effects. Immunology has made major treatment br...

In this study, we therefore analysed the influence of lithium treatment on lifespan and parameters of health during ageing in mice. To determine the concentration of lithium suitable to be administered in a longitudinal ageing study, we first tested the effects of lithium chloride (LiCl) in doses from 0.01 to 2.79 g LiCl per kg chow. C57Bl/6J mice fed with 1.05-2.79 g/kg LiCL in the diet showed lithium plasma levels between 0.4 and 0.8 mM/l. While plasma levels to 0.4 and 0.8 mM/l are well tolerated by human patients, at doses above 1.44 g LiCl/kg, we observed an obvious dose-dependent polydipsia combined with a dis...

ozza Monica Boitano Mattia Alessio-Mazzola Isabella Cevasco Andrea DeCensi Cancer patients are exposed to a greater risk of COVID-19 infection, resulting in treatment delays and unnecessary hospitalizations. International authorities have suggested reducing visits to hospitals and guarantee continuity of care. We developed a home care project called Home Se-Cure (HSC) to guarantee the continuity of oral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous cancer therapy during COVID-19. The Home Se-Cure project included cancer patients living near Galliera Hospital. Patients received home visits by registered nurses (RNs), whoperf...

CONCLUSIONS: We found that progression of PCa associates with translocation of S1P and S2P proteases to the ER and subsequent ATF6 cleavage. This obviates the need for ATF6 transport to the Golgi and enhances UPR and cell proliferation. Thus, we provide the novel mechanistic model of ATF6 activation and ER stress implication in the progression of PCa, suggesting ATF6 is a novel promising target for prostate cancer therapy.PMID:34521429 | DOI:10.1186/s13046-021-02066-7

ConclusionWe found a non-significant association between the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity in PCa patients treated with ADT. However, our results suggest that during the COVID-19 pandemic PCa patients can safely undergo ADT as a cancer therapy without worsening COVID-19 risk and trajectory.

Exp Ther Med. 2021 Sep;22(3):1015. doi: 10.3892/etm.2021.10447. Epub 2021 Jul 15.ABSTRACTProstate cancer is the most prevalent tumor found in men worldwide. Despite the efficiency of primary endocrine prostate cancer therapies, more efficient drugs are needed to tackle the most advanced and resistant forms of this condition. The present study investigated the antitumor effects of low-dose bufalin combined with hydroxycamptothecin on castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) in mice, as well as the possible mechanisms of apoptosis induction. CRPC xenograft tumors were generated in mice and, subsequently, mice received app...
