Comment on: Impact of a severe complication 2 years after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a cohort study from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry

In this issue of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Vidarsson et  al. [1] highlighted an important aspect of bariatric surgery, namely the long-term impact of severe complications following laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The authors examine the impact of severe complications (Clavien–Dindo>3b) 2 years following procedures using a Swedish cohort of 48,201 patients between 2007 and 2016. The study reports severe complications rate and mortality rate of 2.9% and .03%, respectively. The study reports a 2.9% rate of severe complications (n = 1411) within the 30-day postoperative period, which included obstruction (32.4%, n = 454), leak (29.6%, n = 415), and bleeding (26.5%, n = 372), and a reoperation rate of 94.2% of these patients.
