Female and Country Representation on Editorial Boards of Cardiothoracic Surgery Journals

Inequities remain pervasive in academic cardiothoracic surgery. In the United States, only one in twenty practicing cardiothoracic surgeons is female.1 Systemic sex-based disparities have contributed to achievement gaps, with women being promoted later and less often than men, and holding fewer leadership positions at academic institutions and professional societies.2 The cardiac surgical workforce is also unevenly distributed globally, with high-income countries having a 180 times higher density of cardiac surgeons compared to low-income countries.
