Back pain continues to be a global issue with serious health and economic consequences, and has been the greatest contributor to years lived with disability over the last thirty years. 138 Its prevalence increases regardless of age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, and world region. 46, 142 Numerous factors can be attributed to the heterogeneous presentation of back pain. These include difficulty in accurate diagnosis, prognosis and availability of effective treatment options that reduce the reliance on invasive surgical and opiate-based pharmacological intervention.
