Documentation of Cognitive Rest After Concussion by Pediatric Primary Care Providers

Pediatric primary care providers manage the initial assessment of children with concussions and guide ongoing care for cognitive and physical rest until all acute symptoms resolve. The goal of this study was to identify if there were gaps in provider documentation for cognitive rest and if the use of a concussion tool improved discharge instructions. A retrospective chart review was completed on patients 5 to 18 years old who presented to our ambulatory pediatric practices with a concussion. The results showed that although few providers adopted a concussion tool in their practice, those who did were more likely to incorporate vital recommendations in documentation.
