Breast reconstruction and radiation therapy: An Italian expert Delphi consensus statements and critical review
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths for women worldwide with an overall increasing trend of prevalence and mortality rate [1,2]. Breast conserving surgery (BCS) plus radiation therapy (RT) or mastectomy have shown comparable oncological outcomes in early-stage breast cancer and are considered standard of care treatment to be offered to patients based on the specific disease presentation [3,4]. Although both interventions are valid options, mastectomy should not be regarded as equal to breast conservation [5].
