A biofilm is a highly organized community of microorganisms that develops naturally on certain surfaces. Typically, biofilms are made up of microbes and an extracellular matrix that they produce. This matrix can include polysaccharides (chains of sugars), proteins, lipids, DNA, and other molecules. The matrix gives the biofilm structure and helps it stick to a surface. Formation of a biofilm often involves a process called quorum sensing. In this process, microbes detect when they reach a certain population density and change their behavior in ways that help them function as a community. Biofilms are common and h...

The objective of the present study was to determine whether Tempol is able to reverse the effects of morphine on arterial blood-gas (ABG) chemistry in freely-moving Sprague Dawley rats. The intravenous injection of morphine (10 mg/kg) elicited substantial decreases in pH, pO2 and sO2 that were accompanied by substantial increases in pCO2 and Alveolar-arterial gradient, which results in diminished gas-exchange within the lungs. Intravenous injection of a 60 mg/kg dose of Tempol 15 min after the injection of morphine caused minor improvements in pO2 and pCO2 but not in other ABG parameters. In contrast, the 10...

Although the ability of marine mammals to lower heart rates for extended periods when diving is well documented, it is unclear whether marine mammals have electrophysiological adaptations that extend beyond overall bradycardia. We analyzed electrocardiographic data from 50 species of terrestrial mammals and 19 species of marine mammals to determine whether the electrical activity of the heart differs between these two groups of mammals. We also tested whether physiological state (i.e., anesthetized or conscious) affects electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters. Analyses of ECG waveform morphology (heart rate, P-wave duration, an...
