The negative impact of increasing age and underlying cirrhosis on sensitivity of adenosine deaminase in the diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis: a cross-sectional study in eastern China

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern and the leading killer infectious disease worldwide (Furin et al., 2019). In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated the number of TB cases to be 10.0 million, and the number of death caused by TB to be 1.4 million (World Health Organization, 2020). Tuberculous peritonitis (TBP), a type of diffuse peritoneal metastasis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), accounts for 3.1 –6.1% of extrapulmonary TB cases (Guirat et al., 2011, Prevention, 2019, Sandgren et al., 2013, Vaid and Kane, 2017).
