The July Effect

Early in my career, as a staff nurse in the emergency department of a teaching hospital, I recall how a new cohort of medical students, residents, and interns would enter their positions every July. As seasoned nurses, we would (metaphorically) put our arms around the rookies to gently guide them as they learned the ropes. We knew that many did not ask questions for fear of being seen as a novice, so we provided a team-oriented culture to signal our vested interest in them delivering quality health care.
