Commentary: Ephemeral Versus Long-Lived Surgical Metrics: Time for A Change

Dr. Yun and colleagues have presented an article that again shows that pneumonectomy is a disease. The authors report a 5-year survival of patients who had a pneumonectomy of approximately 50%, worse than many cancers or diseases.1 In addition, the author show that not only is pneumonectomy itself an independent predictor of non-cancerous deaths (non-oncologic mortality) but so are age and postoperative predicted DLCO percent. The authors are to be congratulated for this article and its findings.
