Cardio-cerebrovascular disease history complicates hematopoietic cell transplant outcomes

(Cactus Communications) Transplanting hematopoietic stem cells to treat cancers and other conditions carries with it the risk of developing cardio-cerebrovascular diseases (CCVD)--disorders affecting the blood vessels of the heart and brain. Although research on post-transplant CCVD is extensive, there is paucity of knowledge on the effects of pre-transplant CCVD on transplant outcomes. Now researchers in China suggest pre-transplant CCVD indirectly affects patient mortality and survival following transplant through their strong association with post-transplant CCVD.

In this study, we used the UK Biobank (n = 440,185) to resolve previous ambiguities in the relationship between serum IGF-1 levels and clinical disease. We examined prospective associations of serum IGF-1 with mortality, dementia, vascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer, finding two generalized patterns. This study aimed to determine the association between: (i) cognitive decline and bone loss; and (ii) clinically significant cognitive decline on Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) over the first 5 years and subsequent fracture risk over the following 10 years. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that elevated cumulative SBP or DBP was independently associated with increased risk of CVD in the Chinese population. Among participants with 15-year cumulative BP levels higher than the median, that is, 1970.8/1239.9 mmHg-year for cumulative SBP/DBP, which was equivalent to maintaining SBP/DBP level higher than 131/83 mmHg in 15 years, the CVD risk would increase significantly irrespective of whether or not the BP measurements at one examination was high.
