Long-term trends of BMI and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults with type 1 diabetes: an observational study from the German/Austrian DPV registry

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing globally and has reached epidemic proportions. Since 1975, global age-standardized mean BMI increased by about 0.6 kg/m2 per decade in adults and by about 0.36 kg/m2 per decade in children aged 5-19 years [1,2]. Excess weight is an important risk factor for many chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and certain types of cancer [3]. Likewise, overweight and obesity are associated with significantly higher all-cause mortality, particularly at higher BMI levels [4].
