A Team-Based Approach for Testing Biomarkers of Kidney Disease Progression

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an important public health concern given its high incidence, paucity of effective therapies, and strong association with mortality. Survivors of hospitalized AKI are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, de novo chronic kidney disease (CKD), and progression of prevalent CKD. Therefore, risk-classification is critical to guide surveillance and interventions after AKI. Specialized post-discharge care focused on high-risk AKI survivors has been implemented in multiple centers, and interventions to improve clinical and patient-centered outcomes are being investigated.
