Trends and risk factors in severe hypoglycemia among individuals with type 2 diabetes in Korea

Hypoglycemia is one of the major acute complications of diabetes [1]. Hypoglycemic events can result in brain damage, mental change, and even life-threatening consequences [1]. Older adults with diabetes are at increased risk of hypoglycemia [2]. The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in older adults because of an increase in lifespan, as well as the increased risk of developing diabetes in older adults, makes hypoglycemic events more prevalent [3]. Indeed, a study in the United States showed that hypoglycemia requiring hospitalization increased while admissions for hyperglycemia among older adults declined between 1999 and 2011 [4].
