Commentary: Desperately seeking data

The more I try to understand pectus excavatum, the less I realize I know. Pectus excavatum frustratingly persists as an orphan disorder due partly to the relative rarity of the disorder but more to the relative lack of understanding of the physiologic consequences of the abnormality as well as lack of health industry interest in research on the topic. Many patients are told that it is simply a cosmetic problem yet many physicians, including myself, believe there is significant physiologic impairment based on the severity of the abnormality.
