Pravastatin-Induced Acute Pancreatitis: A Case Report and Literature Review
J Investig Med High Impact Case Rep. 2021 Jan-Dec;9:23247096211028386. doi: 10.1177/23247096211028386.ABSTRACTPancreatitis is inflammation of pancreas associated most commonly with chronic alcoholism and gallstones. Other less common causes of pancreatitis are hyperlipidemia, infections, surgery, trauma, post endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and drugs. Drugs are now increasingly recognized as a cause of pancreatitis, and high suspicion and exclusion of other most common causes is required before considering drug-induced pancreatitis. There are few case reports of acute pancreatitis in the literature after statin use, but out of these, only 3 are after starting pravastatin. We are reporting a case of 49-year-old male who presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. His laboratory findings were significant for lipase more than 10 000 on admission, and computed tomography scan of abdomen was showing peripancreatic fat stranding and inflammation. After exclusion of most common causes of pancreatitis, pravastatin was found probable culprit for his symptoms, which he started taking 2 weeks ago. We also reviewed the literature on statins-induced acute pancreatitis. With increased uses of statins, physician need to be vigilant to suspect statins as a culprit in cases of pancreatitis with unknown etiology. Prompt discontinuation of statins is required in these cases.PMID:34180257 | DOI:10.1177/23247096211028386
CONCLUSION: In our sample, percentages of variation in PLR and PD were found to be directly representative of TBI patients’ fentanyl blood concentration. Considering information about blood drug concentration is generally not available at bedside, PLR could be used as a proxy to assess analgesia requirements before a nociceptive procedure in critically ill sedated TBI patients who are vulnerable to stress.
ConclusionFrequent alcohol consumption is associated with increased risk of self-harm and suicidality for young women and men. Associations between illicit substance use and self-harm and suicidality appear stronger in women compared to men.
Hello all, This is my first time posting here so if it seems as though some pertinent information is left out please let me know so I can correct that. As the title states, I have a unique legal consideration that I am looking for some advice on. I was in the military about 11 years ago. While I was younger, immature, and ignorant, I was involved in a physical altercation with another soldier. By this, I mean a fist fight while under the influence of alcohol. My friends and I went out for... Read more
People who experience debilitating back pain come to their doctors with one pressing question: Do I need back surgery? Often, they are surprised to hear me, a neurosurgeon, answer, “No.” In many cases, physical therapy, pain management, weight loss management, and physiatry can help people to delay – and in some cases avoid – backRead more …Expertise is the backbone of successful spine treatment originally appeared inKevinMD.com.
In conclusion, neurovascular imaging in Loeys Dietz syndrome type III patients revealed abnormalities such as aneurysm, tortuosity, coiling and kinking in the vast majority of patients, but clinical events were rare. Neurovascular screening and follow up is advised in all Loeys Dietz syndrome type III patients.PMID:35031499 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejmg.2022.104424
CONCLUSION: Dual locking plates display biomechanical properties that suggest that they can be used in the fixation of comminuted olecranon fractures. Catastrophic failure of the fixation constructs occurs around stress risers at the proximal screws rather than due to displacement at the fracture itself.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dual locking plate constructs can be considered for use in the fixation of comminuted olecranon fractures.PMID:35031124 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2021.07.029
CONCLUSIONS: The free antegrade palmaris longus tendocutaneous venous flap enabled the repair of compound tissue defects of the dorsal digit, resulting in acceptable aesthetics, repaired tendon defects, and wound coverage. This surgical method is an option for the reconstruction of small compound defects of digits with extensor defects.TYPE OF STUDY/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic IV.PMID:35031123 | DOI:10.1016/j.jhsa.2021.11.023
Pflugers Arch. 2022 Jan 15. doi: 10.1007/s00424-021-02656-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSensory neurons are responsible for the generation and transmission of nociceptive signals from the periphery to the central nervous system. They encompass a broadly heterogeneous population of highly specialized neurons. The understanding of the molecular choreography of individual subpopulations is essential to understand physiological and pathological pain states. Recently, it became evident that species differences limit transferability of research findings between human and rodents in pain research. Thus, it is necessary to syst...
Gene. 2022 Jan 11:146192. doi: 10.1016/j.gene.2022.146192. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCalcium-selective channel TRPV6 (Transient Receptor Potential channel family, Vanilloid subfamily member 6) belongs to the TRP family of cation channels and plays critical roles in transcellular calcium (Ca2+) transport, reuptake of Ca2+ into cells, and maintaining a local low Ca2+ environment for certain biological processes. Recent crystal and cryo-electron microscopy-based structures of TRPV6 have revealed mechanistic insights on how the protein achieves Ca2+ selectivity, permeation, and inactivation by calmodulin. The TRPV6 protein...
Environ Res. 2022 Jan 11:112721. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.112721. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to assess the bio-fabrication possibilities of pre-isolated (from bauxite mine tailings) metal-tolerant Aspergillus niger biomass filtrate and the anticancer potential of synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) tested with a Human Cervical cancer cell line (HeLa cells: Henrietta Lacks cells). The nitrate reduction test demonstrated that A. niger has the ability to reduce nitrate, and filtrate derived from A. niger biomass efficiently fabricated AgNPs from AgNO3, as demonstrated by a visible color...
