De-Escalating Adjuvant Therapies in Older Patients with Lower Risk Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Treated with Breast-Conserving Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

While the average age of diagnosis of breast cancer is 62 years, over 30% of patients are 70 years or older[1,2]. The incidence of breast cancer in older patients continues to rise and the global incidence in women ≥70 years is expected to double by 2040, from 445,081 to 908,119[3]. The use of adjuvant therapies in older patients is challenging due to a higher incidence of co-morbidities and functional decline, which increases the risk of treatment-related side effects and death due to non-cancer causes.
