Businesses Performed 60 % of Their U.S. R & D in 10 Metropolitan Areas in 2018

Businesses performed $ 262 billion of research and development in 10 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas ( MSAs ) in 2018. This R&D represents 60 % of the total business R&D performance in the United States. The geographic concentration of business R&D in the United States is much higher than that of other economic indicators, such as gross domestic product or population. This InfoBrief explores the geographic patterns of business R&D performance in the United States and presents new data on the distribution of business R&D personnel by state. Data are from the Business Research and Development Survey from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics.
