Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair and Mitral Valve Surgery Following Acute Myocardial Infarction (Insights From a Nationwide Cohort Study)

Transcatheter mitral valve (MV) repair with MitraClip (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, California) is an established treatment in patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) at inoperable or high surgical risk. Acute ischemic MR can occur due to leaflet tethering or papillary muscle dysfunction secondary to acute myocardial infarction (AMI), leading to cardiogenic shock or congestive heart failure.1-3 While MV surgery has been the mainstay for acute ischemic MR refractory to medical treatment,1 recent reports have shown the feasibility of MitraClip in selected patients with acute/subacute MR following AMI.
