Outer retinal layer thickening predicts the onset of exudative neovascular age related macular degeneration

The sooner macular neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration is detected the better the outcomes of treatment.1,2 This is especially significant in second-affected eyes because the patients have so much more to lose. 3,4 With serial clinical examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans, clinicians may be able to detect early onset of active or exudative nAMD, however frequent monitoring visits contribute to a significant burden of care. Patients undergoing treatment for nAMD in one eye have “opportunistic” monitoring visits for their fellow eye, however these monitoring intervals may be prolonged with extended retreatment intervals or further extended with cessation of treatment.
