At the heart of the matter: cardiovascular health challenges among incarcerated women
According to Eurostat, in 2018, half a million people were incarcerated in the European Union (EU) [1]. Between the years 2008 and 2018, 1 in 20 adult incarcerated individuals in the EU were women, with a stable increase and a constant rate across Europe [1,2]. On the other hand, in the USA, the respective proportion of female detainees is rising, with 9.8% of the total incarcerated population during 2016, being women [3]. It appears that in the EU, women imprisonment rates are lower and more stable as compared to the US [1,3], due to the collateral results of the U.S.
