Side-by-side field comparison of snow and ice control chemicals for anti-icing applications - Rainwater KA, Lawson WD, Surles JG, Estrada FJ, Jackson WA.

This paper presents findings from a side-by-side field comparison of the effectiveness of sodium chloride-based road salt brine (RSB) and magnesium chloride-based Meltdown Apex ™ liquid (MDA) as anti-icing chemicals for snow and ice control associated wit...

Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we profiled transcriptomes of 158,577 cells from 11 patients ’ paratumors, localized/advanced tumors, initially-treated/recurrent lymph nodes and radioactive iodine (RAI)-refractory distant metastases, covering comprehensive clinical courses of PTC.Our study illuminates a comprehensive landscape of PTC ecosystem that sugge...

Guardian Australia picture editor Carly Earl explains the dos and don ’ts of taking pictures of tonight’s full moonWith the September 2021 full moon rising, also known as the harvest moon, many people will pull out their mobile phones to try and take an Instagram-worthy picture, but unfortunately the moon is really challenging to get a great photo of.Two reasons: it is very far away and unless you have a telephoto lens (which makes the moon appear closer than it is) it will always appear as a very small glowing dot in the frame.Continue reading...

Hi. I will be applying to both MD and MPH programs separately. That said, how should the people writing my LORs address both types of programs? Would it look bad if a medical school saw "MPH" mentioned in my LOR? Would it look bad if the letter is too broad (i.e. "I recommend this student to all graduate programs")? How should I go about this? What is the technique here? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am in the process of receiving a letter from an Epidemiology professor with who I've built a great relationship with. The tricky part is that I took an epidemiology-related undergrad course with her, however, she is a professor of Epi in our school's MPH/DPH program. Also, she is very well known in her field. That said, would a letter from her count as a science letter or would I have to unfortunately put it in the non-science category? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I needed money asap so I applied for a bunch of clinical research coordinator positions and chose the first one that accepted me. The lab is a neurosurgery lab at my dream med school, and my title is clinical research coordinator but I'm basically an administrative assistant. It has been 2 months and I am very unhappy with the job, but recently, one of the jobs I had applied to prior to receiving the offer for this job contacted me about a new opening. It is in the same hospital... Read more

Just went to a skills lab and they divided us into small groups. Before beginning each skills session, when asked what your primary specialty was, if the person teaching the skill was from an anesthesiology background, more times than not if you answered something other than anesthesia, the proctor would say something similar to "Well I guess you didn't get any training in this in residency". This included a session on suturing after procedures such as SCS or pumps. Not saying all those... Read more

Introduction Whether short-term, single-mode exercise training can improve physical fitness before a period of reduced physical activity (e.g., postsurgery recovery) is not well characterized in clinical populations or middle-age adults. We investigated skeletal muscle adaptive responses after endurance exercise training (ENT), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or resistance exercise training (RET), and a subsequent period of detraining, in sedentary, middle-age men. Methods Thirty-five sedentary men (39 ± 3 yr) were randomized to parallel groups and undertook 6 wk of either ENT (n = 12), HIIT (n =...

Conclusions The present RCT of a tailored center-based HIIT intervention provides preliminary evidence that this intervention could improve exercise capacity, lung function, RV function, and HRQoL without serious adverse events, which could provide marked clinical benefits after PE. Further larger multicenter randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm these promising findings.

This study investigated the effects of 12 wk of postexercise kefir consumption in cancer survivors who have undergone chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Methods All participants were enrolled in a structured exercise training program and separated into kefir (KEF) or control (CON) treatment groups. KEF consumed 8 oz. of kefir after exercise sessions (3 d·wk−1) for 12 wk. Outcome measures included assessments for body size and composition, aerobic fitness and muscular strength, medical history, and psychological state at pre- and postintervention time points. Blood was collected and analyzed for C-re...
