2014 Vanderbilt Summer Research Experience for Undgraduates Program in Chemical Biology

The objective of the REU program is to introduce students to the excitement and importance of research in chemical biology through a mix of educational and research activities. This ten-week program runs from  May 26 to August 1, 2014 . Students will choose from a list of interdisciplinary projects and will be co-mentored by faculty in Chemistry and the School of Medicine.  Students will be assigned to individual research groups and will broaden their horizons though a variety of experiences that include participating in a mini-symposium on drug discovery, attending seminars given by VICB faculty working across disciplinary lines, and participating in weekly discussions on topics such as scientific ethics and publication.   Our objective is to bring together a select group of 12 rising sophomore, junior, and senior chemistry, biochemistry/biology majors with high potential for careers in chemical biology research at the graduate level. Requirements The application deadline is February 1, 2014  for 1st round consideration and  February 15, 2014  for 2nd round consideration.  Selections will be made by March 1, 2014. Students entering their junior or senior years are given priority. Undergraduates majoring in the physical or natural sciences (primarily chemistry and biology) will be given priority. A minimum undergraduate science GPA of 3.0 is required. Two letters of recommendation are required from your academic major ad...

ConclusionsOur study showed that machine learning-based multiparametric MR imaging radiomics could accurately distinguish aggressive from non-aggressive PTC preoperatively. This approach may be helpful for informing treatment strategies and prognosis of patients with aggressive PTC.

Authors: Mumu SJ, Fahey PP, Ali L, Rahman AKMF, Merom D Abstract While the effect of weather and seasons on physical activity (PA) is well documented for leisure-time physical activities in western countries, scant information is available for developing countries where lifestyle PA is the major source of energy expenditure (EE). In Bangladesh, the traditional calendar divides the year to six seasons that last two months each: summer, rainy, autumn, late autumn, winter, and spring. We developed the Past Year Physical Activity Questionnaire to record culturally relevant physical activities and to help assess the sea...

ConclusionsIn vitro, intraoral scanners have shown acceptable accuracy. The main parameters identified for their influence on precision were interimplant distance, body scan design, scanning pattern, and operator experience. Clinical evidence is limited by the lack of a definitive method of assessing the fit of the framework.

Authors: John F, Robinette NL, Amit-Yousif AJ, Bosnyák E, Barger GR, Shah KD, Mittal S, Juhász C Abstract BACKGROUND: Clinical glioblastoma treatment mostly focuses on the contrast-enhancing tumor mass. Amino acid positron emission tomography (PET) can detect additional, nonenhancing glioblastoma-infiltrated brain regions that are difficult to distinguish on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We combined MRI with perfusion imaging and amino acid PET to evaluate such nonenhancing glioblastoma regions. METHODS: Structural MRI, relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) maps from perfusion MRI...

TripathiAbstractHighly hydrophilic and fouling-resistant polysulfone (PSF)-silica based nanocomposite ultrafiltration membranes were prepared using a one-pot method by combining phase inversion and nanoparticle formation in one step. The membrane forming solution prepared by mixing different amounts of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with PSF solution in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was cast on non-woven support and immersed into an aqueous aci...

PatnaikAbstractLead-free Ba1−zLazTi0.95Sn0.05O3 with z=0.00, 0.015, 0.025, and 0.035 samples were prepared using solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction measurement reveals the single phase formation of ceramic samples. Scanning electron microscopy shows the inhibited grain growth (≤0.5 μm) at low La-doping while the higher La-doping in BTS ceramics yielded the larger grain size (2.5 μm). Raman spectra indicate the substitution of La at ...

Thomas Yeo, Remya Nair, Julien Dubois, Lynn K. PaulSummaryA reliable set of functional brain networks is found in healthy people and thought to underlie our cognition, emotion, and behavior. Here, we investigated these networks by quantifying intrinsic functional connectivity in six individuals who had undergone surgical removal of one hemisphere. Hemispherectomy subjects and healthy controls were scanned with identical parameters on the same scanner and compared to a lar...
