A Retrospective Observational Cohort Study: Epidemiology and Outcomes of Pediatric Unintentional Falls in US Emergency Departments

The leading cause of nonfatal US emergency department (ED) visits for unintentional injuries among children ages 0-17 years was falls (2001-2017).[1] Falls were more common among boys and children ages 0-4 years, with the mechanism of fall varied depending on the age.[2] In Utah, the most common type of preventable injury leading to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admissions was also falls.[3] Falls have been associated with pediatric brain injuries, often influenced by age, race, and sex.[4] Between 2006-2010, child falls accounted for 11,535 head injuries, costing a projected billion dollars nationally.
