Clinical examination of the spine

A thorough and competent clinical examination of the spine is a fundamental skill for all surgical doctors. This should be built upon the foundations of an in-depth knowledge of the associated anatomy and physiology. Clinical examination of the spine should be performed in the setting of spinal trauma, degenerative disease of the spine and spinal deformity. A methodical approach to the examination is essential and should include clinical history, inspection, palpation, movement and special tests.
