Predictive models of individual risk of elective caesarean section complications: a systematic review

Antenatal discussions on risks associated with mode of birth have become paramount since the UK Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board (2015) ruling [1]. Consequently, to ensure legally valid consent, it is necessary to discuss all material obstetric complications ahead of the birth, whether a caesarean section (c-section) or a vaginal birth is planned. As most research focuses on complications of either elective c-section vs emergency c-section, or all c-sections vs vaginal birth, the lack of understanding of potential risk in planned birth mode has prohibited informed decision making.
