Greater effectiveness in the treatment of arrhythmia with radio frequency energy and catheterization

(Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona) An article published in International Journal of Hyperthermia proposes a more effective protocol for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias when applying radiofrequency energy at the site of the arrhythmia by catheterization. The research results from the final year project on the bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering by Sergi Coderch Navarro, supervised by Ana Gonz á lez Su á rez and Oscar Camara, researchers with the PhySense group of the BCN MedTech Research Unit.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Cardiac catheterization is among the most performed medical procedures in the modern era. There were sporadic reports indicating that cardiac arrhythmias are common during cardiac catheterization, and there are risks of developing serious and potentially life-threatening arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF) and high-grade conduction disturbances such as complete heart block (CHB), requiring immediate interventions. However, there is lack of systematic overview of these conditions. AIM: To systematically review existing literature and g...

The computer science technology trend called artificial intelligence (AI) is not new. Both machine learning and deep learning AI applications have recently begun to impact cardiovascular medicine. Scientists working in the AI domain have long recognized the importance of data quality and provenance to AI algorithm efficiency and accuracy. A diverse array of cardiovascular raw data sources of variable quality—electronic medical records, radiological picture archiving and communication systems, laboratory results, omics, etc.—are available to train AI algorithms for predictive modeling of clinical outcomes (in-ho...

Nguyen, Pierre Qian, Tony Barry, Alistair McEwanAbstractRadiofrequency (RF) cardiac ablation is a common technique for efficiently treating Cardiac Arrhythmias. However, the information of the dynamic lesion heating is still currently unavailable in a conventional catheterization laboratory. Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a temporal impedance imaging modality which might be able to track the heat-caused changes within the electrical property distribution of myocardium. Within this paper, a measurement selec...

Conclusions Ventricular tachycardias occur more often in PH patients than previously reported. However, the prognostic relevance of non-sustained ventricular tachycardias in this cohort remains unclear. As a large number of PH patients die from SCD, closer monitoring, e.g., using implantable event recorders, might be useful to identify patients at high risk.
