Hearing and Exposure to Music in Adolescents From Four Schools of C órdoba, Argentina

Conclusions The findings highlight the value of implementing hearing conservation programs in Argentina, analyzing hearing tests correlated with questionnaires about recreational noise exposure in order to detect vulnerable ears early.PMID:33909451 | DOI:10.1044/2021_AJA-20-00076

AbstractIntroductionWe aimed to retrospectively analyze the therapeutic outcomes of using glucocorticoid combined with a vasodilator, breviscapine, versus glucocorticoid alone in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and to explore the impact on different audiometric curves.MethodsData from 154 patients were collected between January 2017 and December 2018. Patients received treatments of either glucocorticoid combined with breviscapine (GC  + Bre) or glucocorticoid alone (GC). These two groups were stratified into low frequencies SSNHL (LF-SSNHL), high frequencies SSNHL (HF-SSNHL), all freq...

ConclusionEH(+) or NR in the cVEMP tuning property test correspond well to EH positivity in the MRI findings. The cVEMP tuning property test is useful for screening and following up EH.

AbstractPurposeThe aim of this study was to determine whether preoperative depressive symptoms influence health-related quality of life (HRQOL) after middle ear surgery in patients with chronic otitis media (COM).MethodsThis prospective clinical case study was conducted at a tertiary referral center. All 102 patients who had undergone middle ear surgery for COM were assessed clinically and by audiometric testing (pure tone audiometry) in pre- and postoperative settings. Disease-specific HRQOL was assessed by the validated chronic otitis media outcome test 15 (COMOT-15) and the Zurich chronic middle ear inventory (ZCMEI-21)...

Propylthiouracil-induced otitis media with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis: a ‍case report and review of the literature. Endocr J. 2020 Sep 29;: Authors: Hiruma M, Sasano Y, Watanabe N, Yoshihara A, Ishii S, Yaguchi Y, Yoshimura Noh J, Sugino K, Ito K Abstract Propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced otitis media with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (OMAAV) is an extremely rare adverse event associated with anti-thyroid drugs and is not well recognized. A 42-year-old woman with Graves' disease undergoing PTU therapy for 8 years visited our hospital...

Conclusion We did not observe a significant correlation between the concentration of TBARs in the peripheral blood or the presence of arterial hypertension and the severity of the initial hearing loss or the prognosis of hearing recovery in patients with SSNHL. The concentration of TBARs in the peripheral blood may not adequately represent the abnormalities that occur in the intracoclear environment. AbstractObjective to implement Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) in a tertiary academic hospital and identify associated risk factors. Prospective study. Screening tests with Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) were done among newborns, prior to hospital discharge. In babies who fail OAE twice, Brain Response Audiometry (BERA) was done, failing which they were referred to higher ENT center for repeat testing and hearing rehabilitation. A total 2323 babies were admitted in the neonatal unit during the study period. Only 773 babies (a third) could be screened for the first OAE, two thirds being lost to study right at incep...

CONCLUSION: Adequate coordination with Paediatric Oncology is essential to carry out active surveillance for ototoxicity and to modify, if possible, the dosage or type of chemotherapy in case hearing is affected. In our experience, and following current recommendations, a pre-treatment assessment is usually performed, as well as monitoring during treatment, at the end of treatment, and annually thereafter due to the risk of a later development of hearing loss.
