Trauma remains a leading cause of mortality in all age groups, with an increasing global impact as the population ages.1 Advances in pre-hospital care, damage control surgery, and blood-based damage control resuscitation have led to significant improvement in initial survival from exsanguination after serious injury,2 but these patients often remain critically ill and are at risk for ongoing sequelae, including organ failure,3 development of chronic critical illness,4 and late mortality after injury.
