Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, is a rapidly growing worldwide epidemic that is recognized as a major public health concern. The number of persons with obesity has nearly doubled since the 1980s, and today approximately 39% of the world's adult population are overweight (BMI 25-30) and more than 13% are obese (BMI>30) [1]. Moreover, obesity is characterized by chronic inflammation which is implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, liver and kidney disease, arthritis and depression [2, 3].
