Premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases in Brazilian municipalities estimated for the three-year periods of 2010 to 2012 and 2015 to 2017

Conclusion: Spatial and temporal distribution of premature mortality rates due to NCDs differed between Brazilian municipalities and regions in the three-year periods evaluated. The South and Southeast had decreased rates of deaths due to cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, as well as diabetes. The North and Northeast had increased rates of deaths due to cancer. There was an increase in the rate of deaths due to diabetes in the Central-West.RESUMO: Objetivo: Estimar a mortalidade prematura por doen ças crônicas não transmissíveis nos municípios brasileiros.

Conclusion: The incidence of penile and anal high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and SCC in men with diabetes was increased compared with men without diabetes. For penile and anal SCCs, this was primarily due to an increased risk in men with T2D.

New UCLA-led research indicates that simple text messages emphasizing the easy availability of COVID-19 vaccines successfully boosted the number of people who got the shot. The researchers, from theDavid Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, theUCLA Anderson School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University, say their findings held true across all demographics, including groups that have been hesitant to receive the vaccine.“We found that text messages that stressed the accessibility of the vaccine and that included ‘ownership’ language — such as ‘The vaccine has just been made available for you...

Arch Med Sci. 2020 Nov 29;17(4):1056-1063. doi: 10.5114/aoms.2020.101305. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant hematologic tumor. Although many new drugs are currently found to significantly improve the median survival, MM is still not curable due partly to drug resistance recurrence. Epidemiological studies have shown that patients with type 2 diabetes have a high risk of malignancy, and patients' treatment with metformin could reduce the risk of cancer as well as associated mortality.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used chemotherapeutics - melphalan combined with metformin or the single dr...

Biol Pharm Bull. 2021;44(8):1151-1155. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b21-00170.ABSTRACTOlanzapine is effective for schizophrenia management; however, it is contraindicated in diabetes patients. In addition, olanzapine is useful for treating nausea and vomiting, such as in the case of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). Therefore, we hypothesized that the contraindicated prescription of olanzapine likely occurs among cancer patients with diabetes, especially by non-psychiatric physicians. Hence, we conducted a nationwide survey to elucidate the situation of such contraindicated prescriptions and the associated risk factors....

Biol Pharm Bull. 2021;44(8):1029-1036. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b21-00276.ABSTRACTCell-based therapy for disease treatment involves the transplantation of cells obtained either from self or others into relevant patients. While cells constituting the body tissues maintain homeostasis by performing remarkable functions through complicated cell-cell interactions, transplanted cells, which are generally cultured as a monolayer, are unable to recapitulate similar interactions in vivo. The regulation of cell-cell interactions can immensely increase the function and therapeutic effect of transplanted cells. This review aims to summarize ...

MAGMA. 2021 Aug 2. doi: 10.1007/s10334-021-00946-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: There is increasing appreciation of the association of obesity beyond co-morbidities, such as cancers, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and stroke to also impact upon the muscle to give rise to sarcopenic obesity. Phenotypic knowledge of obesity is crucial for profiling and management of obesity, as different fat-subcutaneous adipose tissue depots (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue depots (VAT) have various degrees of influence on metabolic syndrome and morbidities. Manual segmentation is time consuming and laborious. Study focuses o...

Econ Hum Biol. 2021 Jul 16;43:101045. doi: 10.1016/j.ehb.2021.101045. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCigarette smoking has long been viewed as a means to control body weight. However, studies on the association between smoking cessation and weight gain have reported mixed findings and, notably, there is limited evidence among the Chinese population - the world's largest smoker population. The extent to which smoking cessation is positively associated with body weight is of interest as excessive weight gain contributes to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal disorders, and some cancers. Additionally, concer...

Cell Mol Immunol. 2021 Jul 28. doi: 10.1038/s41423-021-00740-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe NLRP3 inflammasome is a cytosolic multiprotein complex composed of the innate immune receptor protein NLRP3, adapter protein ASC, and inflammatory protease caspase-1 that responds to microbial infection, endogenous danger signals, and environmental stimuli. The assembled NLRP3 inflammasome can activate the protease caspase-1 to induce gasdermin D-dependent pyroptosis and facilitate the release of IL-1β and IL-18, which contribute to innate immune defense and homeostatic maintenance. However, aberrant activation of the NLR...
