Pancake Kidney: A Rare Prenatal Radiologic Diagnosis

Bilateral failure of the kidneys to ascend during the embryonic period may lead to fusion of the 2 kidneys, which are often pelvic in location, resulting in a round mass known as “pancake kidney,” a rare congenital fusion anomaly. A neonate was diagnosed prenatally with a pancake kidney via fetal magnetic resonance imaging performed at 35 weeks of gestation (Figure 1). The magnetic resonance imaging detected an abnormal position of both kidneys, which appeared at the l evel of the lumbar region and characterized by midline fusion of their poles.
