Metabolic Profile of Women with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency Compared with that of Age-Matched Healthy Controls

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is an enigmatic gynecological, endocrine syndrome described as amenorrhea due to the loss of ovarian function under the age of 40 years [1-3], and is characterized by elevated levels of gonadotrophins and decreased levels of estradiol [4]. The incidence of POI has been estimated to be approximately 1% by the age of 40 [5], and 0.01% by the age of 20 [6]. The clinical presentation of POI is highly heterogeneous and can be associated with delayed puberty, primary amenorrhea, or secondary amenorrhea before the age of 40 [7].
