Effect of menopause on cerebral artery blood flow velocity and cerebrovascular reactivity: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Healthy ageing is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease [1, 2]. For females, this coincides with the onset of menopause and the decline in female reproductive hormones [3, 4]. Oestrogen plays an important role in regulating vascular function, acting directly on the vascular endothelium via the production of nitric oxide [5, 6]. Indeed, a recent systematic review and meta-analysis reported that the variations in oestrogen during the menstrual cycle exerts a small cyclic effect on peripheral conduit artery endothelial function [7].
