Further validation of the Wexner Incontinence Score: A note of appreciation and gratitude

I am humbled to be able to author this editorial about the Wexner/Cleveland Clinic Florida Incontinence Score1 to accompany the publication by Essangri et al.2 When my former trainee, Dr. Marcio Jorge, and I first implemented the incontinence score, we did so because we found shortcomings in all of the previously identified scales, grades, and scores. We aimed to create a quantification score based upon the frequency of incontinence to solid stool, liquid stool, and gas. In addition, we sought to recognize the importance of the impact on quality of life as well as measures of quality of life: lifestyle activity limitations and use of a pad or protective device.
