I completely agree with Dr Parikh's statement that the association between patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is due in large part to the many shared factors (eg, immature development, infection, inflammation, excessive fluid administration, etc) that play a causal role in the development of both disorders. As a result, the presence of a persistent PDA can function as an early risk factor/clinical “biomarker” to help identify infants who are at risk for developing BPD.
