Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by the augmentation of cholesterol levels in the blood and considered as a form of hyperlipidemia. Cholesterol is a water-insoluble molecule that is transported in the circulation by protein particles (lipoproteins), such as very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) [1,2]. In familial hypercholesterolemia, the levels of LDL and non-HDL cholesterol in the plasma are markedly elevated [3].
