Association between serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular events in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes
Uric acid (UA) is the end product of purine catabolism in the body. Animal studies have found that hyperuricemia is associated with atherosclerosis [1]. There is currently no evidence that UA-lowering therapy can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia [2]. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at high risk for cardiovascular disease [3,4]. The prevalence of hyperuricemia is higher in patients with T2DM than in the general population [5,6].
