SARS-CoV-2 among inmates over 60 years of age during a COVID-19 outbreak in a penitentiary complex in Brazil: positive health outcomes despite high prevalence
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The first COVID-19 case in Brazil was reported on February 26, 2020, and since then Brazil has reported over 10 million cases and 248,000 deaths as of February 24 (Painel Coronav írus, 2021). A COVID-19 outbreak started in a maximum-security penitentiary complex in Brasília, Federal District, on April 1. The complex is comprised by four prison units, hosting over 13,000 male inmates, and there were 2,064 COVID-19 confirmed cases by October 7, including 1,724 inmates.
