Magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities during the neonatal period in preterm infants with bilirubin encephalopathy

Bilirubin encephalopathy (BE) is a neurological disorder leading to severe neurological sequelae. Our recent nationwide questionnaire survey study suggested that BE in preterm infants (pBE) may be common.1 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in BE diagnosis. Hyperintensity in the globus pallidus on T1-weighted images in term infants with BE has been reported during the neonatal period.2,3 MRI samples were not obtained in our previous questionnaire survey1; however, we newly reviewed MRI images of infants with pBE for signal abnormalities during the neonatal period.
