Is a Higher Estimated Dose of Radiation to Immune Cells Predictive of Survival in Patients with Locally Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Treated with Thoracic Radiotherapy?
With the wider application of immunotherapy, the effect of radiation on the immune system has drawn attention as it may affect the efficacy of radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Previous studies have demonstrated the deleterious effect of radiation on the immune system due to killing of immune cells, which may reduce the efficacy of radiotherapy and immunotherapy[1 –6]. However, in other studies, radiation-induced tumor killing was found to activate the immune system by generating tumor-associated antigens, which further improved the efficacy of immunotherapy[7].
