Alcohol withdrawal syndrome in trauma victims. Under appreciated costly event

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is one of the events occur due to sudden stop of drinking in patients who have history of alcohol dependency.1 A conservative estimate of the cost of care of diseases and accidents due to alcohol drinking in the United States was approximately $ 250 billion in the year 2010.2 Similarly, European data report the cost of care of an individual due to alcohol abuse ranging from €1591–€7702 per hospitalization.3 The incidence of AWS in trauma victims has been reported to be less than 1%.
