Women in surgery: Disparities in speaking roles at surgical society meetings and beyond

Over the past few decades, the percentage of women physicians in the workforce has gradually increased with females recently comprising the majority of medical school applicants at 50.9%.1,2 Despite this increase, women remain underrepresented in surgical specialties and corresponding leadership structures. Research on gender, racial, and other disparities has increased significantly in an effort to document these inequities and implement strategies to achieve parity.
