Impact of airway Exophiala spp. on children with cystic fibrosis

The role of bacterial pathogens in cystic fibrosis (CF) is well recognised, and antibacterial strategies remain a cornerstone of clinical care in CF [1]. Over recent decades however, it has been increasingly recognised that fungal pathogens may also play an important role in the pathogenesis of CF lung disease [2,3]. Aspergillus fumigatus in particular has been identified as causing airway colonization or respiratory infection in up to 60% of CF patients [4,5] and is associated with increased hospital admissions and poorer clinical outcomes [6 –8].
