Cholesterol lowering in secondary prevention: Could do better

It is not so many years ago that it was disputed whether after myocardial infarction (MI) or the onset of angina the serum cholesterol was related to the incidence of subsequent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events [1]. Our knowledge has moved on considerably since then, but shades of that controversy linger as is shown by the currently half-hearted attempts to lower LDL cholesterol in a substantial proportion of myocardial infarction survivors [2]. The issue of how strongly cholesterol relates to the risk of new ASCVD events after MI is not the issue.
