Is Apixaban Safe and Effective for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis following Primary Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty?

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious post-operative complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA).1 Modern standard chemoprophylaxis using clinical practice guidelines for VTE following TKA and THA produced by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), has reduced the rate of complications.2,3 However, the event rates of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) remain significant, with ninety-day VTE rates for THA and TKA as high as 5% for DVT and 2% for PE.
