Whipple ’s disease diagnosed in a patient with suspected sarcoidosis

Whipple ’s disease (WD) is a rare, multisystemic bacterial infection with an incidence of 1 : 1.000.000 caused by tropheryma whipplei, a gram-positive bacillus. It mostly affect the joints, digestive system, heart and/or nervous system (Obst et al., 2014). The typical symptom complex caused by small intes tinal involvement is diarrhea, weight loss and polyarthralgia. Other symptoms are variable and may include low-grade fever, lymphadenopathy, abdominal pain, chronic cough, anemia, neurological symptoms and skin hyperpigmentation (Ratnaike, 2000).
