Diabetic retinopathy in newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus: prevalence and predictors of progression; A national primary network study

Retinopathy is a leading cause of visual impairment in people with diabetes.[1] Two decades previously, the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), one of the first major randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of therapy in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, identified hyperglycaemia and high systolic blood pressure as predictors for the occurrence and progression of retinopathy in individuals newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus [2]
