Patients with non-idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss show hearing improvement more often than patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss

AbstractIntroductionTo compare inpatient treated patients with idiopathic (ISSNHL) and non-idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (NISSNHL) regarding frequency, hearing loss, treatment and outcome.MethodsAll 574 inpatient patients (51% male, median age: 60  years) with ISSNHL and NISSNHL, who were treated in federal state Thuringia in 2011 and 2012, were included retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed.ResultsISSNHL was diagnosed in 490 patients (85%), NISSNHL in 84 patients (15%). 49% of these cases had hearing loss due to acute otitis media, 37% through varicella-zoster infection or Lyme disease, 10% through Meni ère disease and 7% due to other reasons. Patients with ISSNHL and NISSNHL showed no difference between age, gender, side of hearing loss, presence of tinnitus or vertigo and their comorbidities. 45% of patients with ISSNHL and 62% with NISSNHL had an outpatient treatment prior to inpatient treatmen t (p

CONCLUSION: NRG/RTOG 0022 was the first trial testing the feasibility of IMRT in a multi-institutional setting. In addition to meeting the criteria for acceptable local-regional control and reduction in acute xerostomia, long-term outcomes were very good with few deaths attributed to the studied cancer, 2/3 of patients alive at 10 years, and few grade 3-4 toxicities. Since conduct of this study, further improvements in IMRT have been accomplished both with regards to technical advancements in treatment delivery as well as attention to additional avoidance structures beyond the parotid glands. IMRT has transitioned from an ...

Genes, Vol. 12, Pages 1711: A KCNQ4 c.546C>G Genetic Variant Associated with Late Onset Non-Syndromic Hearing Loss in a Taiwanese Population Genes doi: 10.3390/genes12111711 Authors: Ting-Ting Yen I-Chieh Chen Men-Wei Hua Chia-Yi Wei Kai-Hsiang Shih Jui-Lin Li Ching-Heng Lin Tzu-Hung Hsiao Yi-Ming Chen Rong-San Jiang Clinical presentation is heterogeneous for autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss (ADNSHL). Variants of KCNQ4 gene is a common genetic factor of ADNSHL. Few studies have investigated the association between hearing impairment and the variant c.546C>G of KCNQ4. Here, we...

is the most common tick-borne illness in the USA and Europe. Pathogens involved include Borrelia burgdorferi in the USA and B. afzelii and B. garinii in Europe. The characteristic rash of erythema migrans occurs in 70 –80% of patients. Neurological disease, including facial palsy, meningo-encephalitis, aseptic meningitis and polyradiculopathy, occurs in 10–15%. Cardiac disease, primarily manifest as heart block, is seen in 1–4%. Arthritis is a late complication in about 30% of untreated patients.

ConclusionKetamine and esketamine showed a significant antidepressant action within a few hours or days after administration; however, the long-term efficacy and safety are lacking. In addition, the methodological quality of the reviews was usually critically low, which may indicate the need for higher quality evidence in relation to the theme.

Conclusion: There is only weak evidence to support the relationship between BPPV and osteoporosis or low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Further prospective studies with more robust methodologies are needed to clarify the association between BPPV and disorders of bone metabolism.

In our community-based prospective cohort study in young children, we observed a significant increase in pneumococcal serotype 35B nasopharyngeal (NP) commensal colonization during the 2011–2014 timeframe, but these strains were not associated with disease. Beginning in 2015 and continuing through to the present, the serotype 35B virulence changed, and it became the dominant bacteria isolated and associated with pneumococcal acute otitis-media (AOM) in our cohort. We performed comparative analyses of 250 35B isolates obtained from 140 children collected between 2006 and 2019. Changes in prevalence, clonal-complex com...
